“The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”
1 Corinthians 1 18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written: ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.’ 20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things – and the things that are not – to nullify the things that are,
Ladies! Are you smarter than most? Exceptionally qualified? Very ambitious? Do you have a lot on your resume? Have you competed with the best and brightest in prestigious arenas? Do you seem to just excel and move up the ladder at everything you attempt? Do you find yourself constantly scanning help wanted ads online or waiting to hear by word of mouth about the next greatest thing in terms of career opportunities that will put you in the right place with the right people to give you the break you’ve been waiting for and (in your opinion) that is long overdue?
If you answered yes to any of these (or even if you did not) keep reading to find out a great opportunity it sounds like you’d be perfect for!
Genesis 2:4-18 4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens- 5 and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no man to work the ground, 6 but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground – 7 the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. 8 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. 9 And the LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground – trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10 A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there.) 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs alone the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. 15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, ‘You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.’ 18 The LORD God said, ‘It is not good for man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.’ 19 Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs, and closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he head taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
Eve literally does the providing work God commissions Adam to do, but she is not responsible for it in the way Adam is. She works in a way that complements Adam’s providing, not in a way that eliminates the need for it
This is the ULTIMATE help wanted ad with the employer being God Almighty. God makes Adam the responsible party for provision. The direct fruit of working the ground is food and other raw materials for living. In this way, God commission Adam as being in charge of literally making a living. Ultimately God is provider. He provided Adam the worker, Eve the helper, and the earth for them to cultivate. God commissions Adam specifically to model God in the way Adam is a mini-provider after God’s image because of the fact that Adam has primary responsibility for making things grow from the ground. Adam is responsible over this, meaning he oversees this kind of work. Eve is helper or a non-responsible party who is supportive of the responsibility God gave Adam.
Eve is essential. She needs to understand and know how to do this kind of work in order to be an exceptional helper. She may even understand this kind of work better than Adam. Fortunate for Adam that God gave him such a capable helper! He should really be able to excel now in the work God has for Him with a fierce woman like Eve by his side.
I struggle to think of a man who couldn’t benefit from a wife who is passionately ambitious, highly talented, incredibly proficient or however else you think of yourself- or a gospel cause that would not benefit from such incredible women in a helping role for that matter. See this stunning statistic on how marriage can impact even the earning potential of a man: https://www.stlouisfed.org/publications/regional-economist/april-2002/for-love-or-money-why-married-men-make-more Regardless of whether your husband ends up earning more money because of you or not when God saw man working by himself He did not think that was good and God decided that the man needed help for the work God gave him.
Eve literally does the providing work God commissions Adam to do, but she is not responsible for it in the way Adam is. She works in a way that complements Adam’s providing, not in a way that eliminates the need for it as this would be the exact opposite of God’s design for Adam. A helper does not do everything for the person they are helping. Amen?
Scripture refers to God as the ultimate Helper.
Psalm 118 6 The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? 7 The LORD is with me; he is my helper. I will look in triumph on my enemies.
Psalm 33 17 A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save. 20 We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield.
God is essential. Nothing – absolutely nothing- good gets done without Him. This is the position Eve finds herself in. Her Adam desperately needs her. Does he lack social skills or assertiveness? Does he often fail to see clearly what he is good at? Is he unorganized while you are an organization pro? Then by all means help the man! He needs you. His helper. God decided (literally in the beginning) that YOU were indispensable- that nothing could really get done without you. He let Adam languish by himself for a bit so he could feel what life was life without his Eve. It was so devastatingly off kilter with what was needed that the LORD God only let it go on for a few verses! Adam needs Eve in a symbolic representation of how we need God.
Your role as a Christian wife is to cover your husband’s weaknesses and make him look good as he is to show you off.
1 Corinthians 13 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
In a similar, though imperfect way, the church shows off the worthiness of Jesus through the adoration that the church has for Jesus.
Ephesians 5 15 Be very careful, then, how you live – not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. 22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. 32 This is a profound mystery – but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
1 Corinthians 11 3 Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
“‘Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father save me from this hour’? No it was for this very reason I came to this hour…Father, glorify your name!‘”
A woman after God’s own heart covers her man’s weaknesses. She encourages him in his weaknesses and never makes him look inadequate in public. If her husband’s profitable work skills cap him at making a certain amount of money and it would not be a snare for you both to have more money, then by all means make more money for the family. But do it in a way that is submissive, humble and makes your Adam look good like Christ’s submission and humility in His first coming – though He was infinitely worthy of all glory and honor and praise because He is God and was with God at the beginning, made God the Father look good.
John 1 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word, was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 12 27 ‘Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father save me from this hour’? No it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name!‘ 29 Then a voice came from heaven, ‘I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.’
John 14 28 ‘You heard me say, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. 30 I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me. 31 but the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me. ‘Come now; let us leave.
Prideful Eve selfishly wants to rely on herself and not allow anyone else the joy or sacrifice of doing it. She is concerned first and foremost with her own self-reliance
Let your Adam get glory for this kind of work outside the home while you, behind scenes make it happen. Why do all this hard stuff? Because your flesh does not want this and it would honor God.
Prideful Eve selfishly wants to rely on herself and not allow anyone else the joy or sacrifice of doing it. She is concerned first and foremost with her own self-reliance not on lifting up her sinful (and sometimes deeply grieving!) Adam. Of all people in the world Eve would accept this sacrifice from Adam is the one she would hate the most to get this from. He would have this to hold over her head right? She absolutely cannot let him one-up her in this area. So she does what any reasonable sin-bound woman would do. She ruthlessly defends her title of “INDEPENDENT CHICK” and tells Adam he can keep his measly earnings (or large earnings for that matter-Eve doesn’t care) because she doesn’t need him or his money. She still wants to cuddle with him, get wonderful gifts and lavish compliments from him, and maybe even be intimate with him from time to time though. Isn’t this why Eve married her Adam in the first place? So he could give her things she wants not things she doesn’t want that could possible lead to her…humility (shreek!).
Also, ladies (especially my sisters who – like I once did – claim they want to save the world) the gospel is at stake in you doing this role. The Lord specifically says in His Word that He gives certain roles to women on account of the Word.
Titus 2 3 Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. 4 Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.
1 Corinthians 14 33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace. As in all the congregations of the saints, 34 women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church. 36 Did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached? 37 If anybody thinks he is a prophet or spiritually gifted, let him acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord’s command. 38 If he ignores this, he himself will be ignored. 39 Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.
1 Timothy 3 14 Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these instructions so that, 15 if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.
if you really cared about saving the world you would read the Word like your life depends on it… And, you would do what the Word says.
When you respect your husband as his helper, not his superhero who does everything, for him you risk…
showing people the gospel! In your attentiveness to God’s Word, and in response, to the needs your husband has that you were uniquely designed to meet you show off the worthiness of Christ. A believing wife who obeys and respects her husband shows that Christ is worthy of our obedience and respect. If you are a Christian and firmly believe that Christ is the only way to salvation then the only way to “save the world” is through the gospel.
While people have physical needs for shelter or food salvation is not found in any material provision according to the Bible.
Isaiah 44 12 The blacksmith takes a tool and works with it in the coals; he shapes an idol with hammers, he forges it with the might of his arm. He gets hungry and loses his strength; he drinks no water and grows faint. 17 From the rest he makes a god, his idol; he bows down to it and worships. He prays to it and says, ‘Save me; you are my god,’ 19 No one stops to think, no one has the knowledge or understanding to say ‘Half of it I used for fuel; I even baked bread over its coals, I roasted meat and I ate. Shall I make a detestable thing from what is left? Shall I bow down to a block of wood?
Whether you bow down to wood or ‘Benjamins’ (aka money) know that NOTHING can save a person except God alone through Christ His Son.
John 14 6 Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 11 25 Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; 26 whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?’
Jesus cares about our physical needs, hence all the healing He did in the gospel accounts. However, unless you contend for the gospel each day (regardless of the name of your profession or where you do your work) you cannot be said to be trying to ‘save the world.’ If you really cared about saving the world you would read the Word like your life depends on it- because it does! And, you would do what the Word says.
If you cannot even give up your dream job that makes your ego feel so high and mighty, then how can you say you would abandon your whole life, take up your cross, and follow Jesus…you can’t say that because you are not doing it now
Many of us are taught in the American church to sign a card or raise your hand at a certain time during the service and that will save us from our sins. However Jesus mentions over and over that the way to salvation is forsaking everything we want for Him.
Luke 14 26 If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters – yes even his own life – he cannot be my disciple. 27 33 In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.
Attempting the challenging commands that Christ gives to wives is one way of seeing if you are for real about Jesus and really would give up everything for God. If you cannot even give up your dream job that makes your ego feel so high and mighty, then how can you say you would abandon your whole life, take up your cross, and follow Jesus. Honestly, you can’t say that because you are not doing it now. Additionally, think about the salvation of your husband. He needs opportunity to truly sacrifice for you – like offer your something you are very capable of doing for yourself – to see if he is for real about Jesus and can abandon selfishness enough to love His wife the way God commands. By resisting this role, you women who claim to want to save the world – you risk denying countless persons the opportunity to see the gospel in action. Do you want to be more like Jesus ladies? Then take up humble submission and obedience like Jesus towards His Father (stay tuned for “Submission and Sex” piece soon to come that will deal with this in more detail).
God works. We work. The issue is who is going to make the money.
All these reasons are why handing over the responsibility for providing to one’s husband and slipping into the very uncomfortable role of helper is such a great test of whether we are really following Christ. That is, whether we really follow Christ to the point of the death of our flesh. The issue with women working today is not whether women do or should work. Of course women work. We are people and God created us in His image.
Genesis 1 26 Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’ 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning – the sixth day.
Genesis 2 1 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
God works. We work. The issue is who is going to make the money. Who is going to have the power in the relationship-the control, the supposed upper hand?! Eve resolves that if she cannot dominate then she will settle for sharing the authority. Straight down the middle. Just the way her pride likes it. This is not, however, how God likes it. God calls Christians to get their praises from Him and not men.
John 12 42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in Him, But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; 43 for they loved praise from men more than praise from God.
Matthew 6 18 …and your Father, who sees what is done in secret will reward you.
Let Christ be your only reward not whatever ego stroking is to be gained by grabbing accolades for yourself. Let God believe you when you say ‘ord I will follow you wherever that leads me.’
And ladies -that is, all who seem to idolize men left and right- stop it! It disgusts me (especially when I myself do it) and I am sure it disgusts our Savior. Remember the God’s commandment:
Exodus 20 3 ‘You shall have no other gods before me.
Do not put men before God! Were you created by a man? Stop giving men all the glory by trying to copy the ways they work and the roles God has clearly given to them in scripture and do life in the way God created you to. If you are not sure how God created you, then read His word, pray in His Spirit, and talk to wise older women about it. Titus 2 specifically encourages us to learn the precious things of life related to our role from older Christian women. Just do not act on your own impulses and pride and what you know you can get support from the culture for. That is not the way of godly women in Christ. The sin of the flesh leads to death. But Christ has come that we may have life, in Him alone!
John 10 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.
The work men do and the way they naturally do it is NOT the only valuable way to work. We pattern ourselves after God not men. If I hear another woman say proudly that she’s the only chick with all the guys in the boardroom I will scream. Did those men you compare yourself to all the time die on the cross that you ‘may have life and have it to the full’? Certainly not! Let the one who says otherwise be accursed.
Galatians 1 6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel – 7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! 10 Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I am trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.
I am tired of hearing women obsess over what men get to do or what men mostly do as being the ultimate thing to achieve. Have some self respect ladies! You dont need to prove yourself by doing things with the guys. They are no better than you and are certainly not the model for how to do things “the right way.” The focus by our generation on competing with the guys is sickening to me! Have you met a guy before? They are human so stop looking at the only kind of work they can do as the only kind of work you should be doing and embrace the ways we are different.
Do what you do the way you do it. A real “G” (or Grown Up Gal), doesn’t need an office to set her schedule. She sets her own! Grow up and stop being ruled by the world. Let God alone tell you who to be and how to be it, not what you see on Suits. Do work that shows off the things that only you can do in your marriage and stop modeling yourself after mere man.
You were made for something more! If you are going to have an earthly boss let it be your husband. He alone is tasked with dying for you so its an even exchange. Do NOT labor tirelessly giving your all to work for a man who is not your husband. It shows way too much respect to someone who is not required to give anything back to you except the ego stroking that is the reason you stay at the job in the first place.
Yes i said it! I know it is true because I have been there. I was selfish and prideful but now I submit to God (sometimes begrudgingly though so I am praying God changes my heart). Stop looking for applause around every corner and do work for ONE day without an accolade. Then wake up and do it again. Thats God! That is the work of the Holy Spirit. That shows off the worthiness of Christ to the world NOT me doing what I want and for whom I want without even checking in the scriptures. A christian should look different from the world. If you don’t then how can you call yourself one? Do you really think Christ will know you when He comes?
Let the following scripture be true of your life!
Ephesians 1 18 I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, 20 which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.
Ephesians 2 1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions – it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realm in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Dear Lord Jesus, please give us courage to carry our cross and conviction to stay on our cross until your good work in us and in our lives is complete! Amen.
